Born from a real paddock problem. Refined with equine nursing insight.

The Ground Grazer didn’t start as a business.
It started as a last-ditch effort to manage one very problematic gelding in my own paddock.

My name is Jess, and I’m an Equine Surgical & Ambulatory Nurse and Founder of The Ground Grazer. Like many horse owners, I’ve lived through the stress of managing herd feeding — but one of my horses took it to another level.

Once he finished his own feed, he became extremely aggressive around food.
He would:

  • push the other horses off their feed

  • steal extra meals

  • balloon in condition from overeating

  • and worst of all — rip rugs straight off the other horses

And not just one or two rugs…
I repair rugs for a living — and even I couldn’t keep up with the damage he was causing.

Every feed time was chaos.
The quieter horses were missing out.
The rugs were constantly destroyed.
And no management strategy was working.

I needed a way to:

  • keep him occupied longer

  • redirect his energy

  • slow his intake

  • protect the herd

  • reduce the bullying

  • and give everyone time to finish their feeds safely

So in frustration — and hope — I hand-made the very first version of The Ground Grazer.

A simple idea:
Give him his own slow feeder after he finished his hard feed so he wouldn’t harass the others.

And it worked.

He stayed busy.
He stayed calm.
The other horses finally ate in peace.
His weight settled.
And the rug destruction… almost completely stopped.

Today, because he’s occupied and satisfied, I rarely repair rugs anymore — a huge amount of time and resources have been saved!

That first handmade prototype is what led to the refined, reinforced, and polished version of The Ground Grazer that horses use today.

Why this matters

My experience taught me exactly what many owners struggle with:

✔ Food aggression
✔ Herd bullying
✔ Rug destruction
✔ Overeating
✔ Stress at feed time
✔ Behavioural escalation
✔ Weight management issues

The Ground Grazer became the solution to all of it — naturally, safely, calmly.

It wasn’t created in a factory.
It was created in a real paddock, with real behavioural challenges, for real horses who needed a safer, calmer feeding system.

Used by trainers, vets, and everyday owners

Today The Ground Grazer is trusted in:

  • racehorse stables

  • performance yards

  • spelling properties

  • veterinary clinics

  • pony club families

  • mixed herds

  • and everyday paddocks

Because every horse deserves the chance to eat in peace — without stress, conflict or damage.

Our mission

To help horses eat the way they were meant to —
calmly, slowly and safely, from the ground up.

Cleaner stables.
Calmer horses.
Fewer destroyed rugs.
A happier herd.
